Our Mission

CS for Oregon is a coalition of K12 educators and state educational leaders who believe that research, data and classroom experience are critical in ensuring that all Oregon students engage with high-quality CS education.
We advocate for long-term systemic change that is sustainable and scalable to ensure that all educators across our state are equipped to teach CS.
Our Values

- Inclusive: We prioritize the meaningful inclusion of diverse perspectives to design learning experiences that embrace those historically marginalized in computing.
- Community-oriented: We create collaborative spaces for community and cultivate relationships to form authentic partnerships.
- Evidence-based: We conduct research for and with educators to inform action.
- Impactful: We drive systems-level change by advocating for policies and practices that support inclusive computing education.
Who We Are
CS for Oregon is led by a multi-disciplinary and cross-institutional partnership with faculty members from Oregon State University-Cascades, Portland State University, and University of Oregon. Along with facilitators featured here, CS for Oregon includes many educators throughout the state and studies critical problems of practice that are broadly relevant to CS educators.

Teacher Profile
Jennifer Tuttle
Subject: Computer Science
School: Ontario High School
Location: Ontario, OR
“I was using boxed curriculum and felt my knowledge of the subject was like Swiss cheese. There were a lot of holes in my knowledge. I was directed to the summer ECS workshop.. and that has put me on an amazing path.”

Teacher Profile
Michelle Balmeo
Subject: American Studies, Media, and Computer Science
School: West Albany High Schoo

Teacher Profile
Philip Reed
Subject: Computer Science, CTE Visual Arts, and Communications
School: Waldport High School

“When I introduce E-Textiles, the leadership structure in the class is often flipped on its head. I love it when those who are strong with traditional programming start asking others for help.”

Teacher Profile
Terry Alexander
Subject: Computer Science
School: Hillsboro High School
Location: Hillsboro, OR
“I tell my students I was a hiring manager, and I never hired a woman or a person of color. They look at me and say, ‘I thought you were the good guy.’ I never had a resume from an underrepresented group, so I never had the opportunity to diversify our workforce. I realized I had to go backwards to fix the problem.”

Teacher Profile
Taghrid Elmeligu
Subject: Computer Science
School: McMinnville High School
Location: McMinnville, Oregon
“Computer science touches each and every field of study and jobs right now. Being able to problem solve, to describe your solution, to be able to persist in finding a solution to a problem you are working on, all of these are skills essential to success in computer science, but are also transferable to any other field of study or the job market”.

Teacher Profile
Corrina Hargett
Subject: Early Childhood Education
Teaches CTE/ECS/CSP/Psychology
School: Newport High School
Location: Newport, OR
“Nobody knows everything, and we all really have to be able to have the opportunities to work together to collaborate and experience different perspectives. I was scared, very, very scared of that curriculum. And now I really embrace it.”

Teacher Profile
Kendra DeWater
Subject: Math & Computer Science
School: Oregon City High School
Location: Oregon City, OR
“The three strands of ECS (equity, inquiry, and subject content) have made their way into each subject I teach, because they really are what helps us focus on what students really need and want from their education. The world is a different place than it used to be, and this lens helps our education be different, too. ”
